TAP A320 hits motorbike on the runway in Guinea
Two people were killed when a TAP Air Portugal Airbus A320 hit a motorcycle on the airstrip of Conakry International Airport in the Guinean capital on Friday evening.
The previous report communicated earlier on Saturday had so far reported one death. But the two people on the motorcycle eventually died, according to a spokesman for the public airline.
The accident of flight TP1492, which took off from Lisbon on Friday, occurred when "a motorcycle tried to cross the runway" during landing, the Portuguese carrier explained in a press release.
“All safety procedures were followed, but it was not possible to avoid the accident,” TAP said, adding that there were no injuries among passengers and crew.
The driver of the motorcycle was "a security guard, employee of a company responsible for securing the fence of the airport", specified for its part the airport Ahmed Sékou Touré in a press release. An investigation has been opened by the Guinean Civil Aviation Authority "in order to elucidate the causes and responsibilities" of this accident, according to airport authorities. TAP said it was "cooperating with local authorities" in this investigation.
TAP's return flight, which was to land this Saturday in the Portuguese capital at 5:10 a.m. (6:10 a.m. French time), has been canceled, according to information from the Portuguese airport manager (Ana).
